From exciting role-playing to valuable practical experience

Motivz as a practice partner at Fontys Master System Design

“Can I talk to you about my salary?”

For many students, that is not an easy question. Yet it was precisely with that sense that several conversations started during a Fontys Master System Design workshop day at Eindhoven University of Technology.

This day focused on practicing professional interviewing. No theory from a book, but realistic situations that students will really face in their careers. Motivz was allowed to participate as a practice partner and have these conversations with students and provide feedback.

Realistic conversations, real excitement

The workshop consisted of short role-playing games in which students had conversations with us. In doing so, we took on the role of HR or recruitment manager and talked to them about topics such as salary, development and career opportunities. One student sat down at the table, another student observed the conversation. Afterwards, we reflected together.

At first, the tension was palpable. That also makes sense. Talking about salary or ambitions remains difficult for many people, especially if you haven't done it often. But we soon saw that tension turn into focus and self-confidence. Students dared to ask questions, take positions and really have a conversation.

From theory to practice

What made this day so valuable was how quickly theory came to life. Students noticed that small things make a big difference. How to ask a question. When you are silent. How to listen and keep asking. And how you can express your own interests clearly without sharpening the conversation.

After each role-playing game, we took the time to look back together. What went well? What could be better? It was precisely these feedback moments that provided great insights and recognition. Sometimes that led to a real aha-moment, in which students suddenly understood why a conversation went the way it did.

Learning by doing

For us at Motivz, this is exactly what gives us energy. We believe that professional conversations can be learned, not just by talking about them, but especially by having them. By being allowed to make mistakes in a safe setting and reflecting on them together.

As an employment intermediary, we work with technical talent every day, from students and starters to experienced professionals. Moments like this show how important it is to help people become stronger in their communication early on. Skills that they carry with them throughout their careers.

Valuable encounters

In addition to the discussions themselves, there was also room for meetings. After the role-playing games, we talked to students about their ambitions, doubts and plans for the future. This provided valuable insights, both for them and for us.

After the workshop, we continued to chat with teachers and other practical partners present during the lunch organized by Fontys.

We look back on an inspiring day where learning, practice and experience came together. Thanks to Fontys, the students and all the partners involved for their trust and pleasant cooperation. As far as we are concerned, this certainly tastes like more.

Curious about what Motivz, as a practical partner, can do for educational institutions or organizations that work with technical talent?
We are happy to think along.
